March 10th, our precious Zuzu came to her end on this earth. She waited until her Daddy returned home from Alaska that afternoon. Jason, Jerry, Charlotte Watts and I were with her, supporting her, loving her, as Dr. Linda Allen came to our house to help ease Zuzu from her labored breathing into a peaceful place.
We buried her on the North side of the house, where I can see her from my bedroom window. She can bark at the hunters during duck hunting season, sniff out raccoons sleeping in trees nearby, flop and roll in the cool grass, and watch for con trails in the sky.

We were lucky to find Zuzu in a box of puppies at the Irrigation Festival eleven years ago. She was a mix of all the best traits of Australian Shepherd, Bearded Collie, Black Lab and Irish Wolfhound. It was love at first sight. She had a pink nose with black polka dots, which, as she grew from puppy to dog, turned all black.

Zuzu stole our hearts, as over the years she endeared herself to us. She became a fixture at The Buzz, where she shared her precious self with all who walked through the door. The Saturday before she died on Thursday, she spent her final night at The Buzz. She shared some chocolate ice cream with Charlotte Watts, greeted customers, watched me constantly from the door where she knew she was allowed to be, and literally trotted and bounded happily, like a dog in a cartoon, across the parking lot on her way to the car at closing.

As my Mother said last night, Zuzu was my sanity. I believe she was. It was our privilege to have her in our lives. She was our bell weather when it came to raised voices and arguing. She was sensitive and reminded us whenever we forgot.

Soar free Zuzu girl.
